How to Set Up an Ergonomic Laptop Workstation
Laptop ergonomics done right: why the screen and keyboard have to separate, what to buy at $50 and $150, and how to set the heights so your neck stops hurting.
A laptop is a compromise pretending to be a computer. The screen and the keyboard are bolted together about ten inches apart, which is fine for an hour in an airport and quietly destructive over an eight-hour workday. Put the keyboard where your wrists want it and the screen ends up in your lap, so you crane your neck down at it. Raise the screen to eye level and the keyboard goes with it, so you type with your arms up and your wrists bent back.

Why a Laptop Can’t Be Ergonomic on Its Own
There are two correct heights at a desk, and they are not the same height.
Your screen wants to be at eye level, with the top of the display roughly level with your eyes so your gaze angles slightly down into the middle of it. Your keyboard wants to be at elbow level, low enough that your upper arms hang from your shoulders and your elbows open to about 90 degrees.
On a desktop those are two separate objects and you set each one independently. On a laptop they are one object, so you get to pick which one is wrong.
Most people, without deciding to, pick the neck. The laptop sits flat on the desk, the screen ends up 8 to 10 inches below eye level, and the head tips forward to meet it. A human head weighs 10 to 12 pounds upright. Tilt it forward 30 degrees and the load on the neck and upper back roughly triples, because the muscles are now holding that weight out on a lever instead of balancing it on top of the spine. Hold that for a workday and it shows up as the ache between the shoulder blades that everyone who works on a laptop eventually describes.
The fix is not better posture. You cannot hold your head up over a screen that sits below it, not for six hours. The fix is moving the screen.
What You Actually Need
Three things, and the third one is the one people skip.

The stand alone does nothing good. If you raise the laptop and keep typing on its built-in keyboard, you have traded a neck problem for a wrist and shoulder problem, and you may well have made things worse. The stand and the external input devices are one purchase in two boxes, not a sequence you can stop halfway through.
Total damage at the low end: roughly $50 for a stand and a keyboard-and-mouse combo. If you have an old keyboard and mouse in a drawer, it’s $25.
Step 1: Raise the Screen to Eye Level
Put the laptop on something until the top edge of the screen is level with your eyes when you sit upright looking straight ahead. For most people at a standard 29-inch desk, that’s a lift of 4 to 6 inches.
The reference point is the top of the screen, not the middle. Your eyes should land slightly below horizontal when they hit the center of the display, because looking slightly down is the neutral resting angle for the eye and neck. Setting the middle of the screen at eye level puts the top too high and tips your head back. One exception: if you wear progressive or bifocal lenses, drop the screen an inch or two lower, because you read through the bottom of the lens and a high screen makes you tilt your head back to find it.
Distance matters almost as much as height: about an arm’s length, roughly 20 to 30 inches from your face. What to lift it with:

- Books. Genuinely fine. Hardcovers, flat, stable, free. Use them for two weeks to find out whether you’ll actually stick with the setup before spending anything.
If the laptop lives at this desk permanently, an external monitor on an arm beats any stand: bigger screen, independent height adjustment, and the laptop closes and moves off to the side. Step 2: Add an External Keyboard and Mouse
The laptop keyboard is now four to six inches above where it should be. That’s not a side effect, it’s the plan. Type on the desk surface below the raised screen instead.
Anything works here to start with. A $20 wired keyboard and mouse solve the ergonomic problem exactly as well as a $200 pair. What you’re buying above that is comfort and feel, not health.

One layout note that matters more than the brand: a keyboard with a number pad pushes your mouse hand several inches further out to the right, which pulls your arm away from your body and loads the shoulder. Step 3: Set the Keyboard Height From Your Elbows
Now that the keyboard is a separate object, set its height correctly, which means setting it from your body rather than from the desk.
Sit the way you actually sit, back against the chair, shoulders relaxed, upper arms hanging straight down. Bring your hands to the keyboard. Your elbows should open to roughly 90 to 110 degrees with your forearms parallel to the floor or angled very slightly down.
Two signs the surface is too high: your shoulders creep up toward your ears, or your forearms angle uphill to reach the keys. Both are extremely common at standard desks, which are built at 29 inches for a person around 6 feet tall and are too tall for most people.
The fix is the chair first. Raise it until your elbows hit the right angle. If the desk is still too high with the chair at its limit, the answer is an under-desk keyboard tray that drops the keyboard a few inches below the desktop, not more chair height.
While you’re at it, fold down the flip-out feet on the back of the keyboard. Those tilt the keys up toward you and bend your wrists backward, which is the single most common cause of desk wrist pain. Step 4: Fix Your Feet and Back
Raising the chair to fix the keyboard height often lifts your feet off the floor. Dangling feet put the whole weight of your legs on the underside of your thighs and the front edge of the seat, which cuts circulation and drags your pelvis into a slouch within about twenty minutes.
Put something solid under them. A footrest, a shoebox, a ream of copy paper. Thighs roughly parallel to the ground, feet fully supported, no pressure line across the back of the knee.
Then set the chair’s lumbar support so it fills the inward curve of your lower back, and sit back into it rather than perching forward on the front third of the seat. Step 5: Lighting and Glare
Laptop screens are smaller and often glossier than desktop monitors, which makes them worse for glare and worse for eye strain.
Set the desk so the screen is perpendicular to any window, with the light coming from the side. A window directly behind the screen puts a bright field behind everything you look at and forces your pupils to fight; a window directly behind you throws reflections onto the display.
Then match screen brightness to the room instead of running it at maximum, and add a task lamp off to the side if the room is dim. A basic LED task lamp around $30 handles it. Mistakes That Undo the Whole Setup
Buying the stand and skipping the keyboard. The most common failure by a wide margin. You’ve moved the wrist problem to shoulder height and called it done.
Setting the middle of the screen at eye level instead of the top. Puts the display too high and tips your head back, which is its own kind of neck strain.
Pulling the screen in close because the text is small. Increase the system text size and push the screen back to arm’s length. Close viewing distance is what drives the focusing fatigue.
Raising the chair without fixing the feet. You fix the wrists and break the lower back. The footrest is part of the chair adjustment, not an accessory.
Working from the couch and expecting the desk setup to compensate. It doesn’t average out. Three good hours at a proper station and five bad ones on the sofa is five bad hours.
The Short Version
Raise the screen so its top edge is at eye level, about an arm’s length away. Put a separate keyboard and mouse on the desk below it. Set the keyboard height from your elbows at 90 degrees, not from the desk. Support your feet after you raise the chair. Put the window to the side of the screen, not behind it.
